Ta-DAAH! A Phased Array Solution!

Harfang's Detachable Active Array Head

Phased Array technology has been a fixture on the NDT landscape for some time. Despite the attractiveness of the technology and the potential solutions it provides, Phased Array technology has failed to spread significantly within the NDT industry. There are several reasons for this lack of PA proliferation, the most significant of which being cost. Until only recently, most PA units were well out of reach to many businesses. Today, the price of units is substantially lower than the past, however the price of transducers remains an issue with many potential PA users, thanks largely to the amount of customisation and speciality required.

Enter DAAH - Detachable Active Array Head. Harfang's new solution to the issue of cost and specialisation of PA.

Harfang, manufacturers of the X-32, have developed a smaller, cheaper, standardised probe design to make purchasing and using Phased Array technology more efficient. The new concept is a search unit that has detachable active array heads of standard connectivity and footprint. Harfang hopes to offer a "low-cost, industrial, hassle-free phased array solution to very common UT inspections, without an absolute need for customisation".

In short, the advantages of DAAH include:

- Lower production cost, translating to cheaper retail price

- No need to spend precious time in array design and qualification

- Ability to test probe heads before committing to use

- Freedom to utilise different instrument connectors, leaving users not tied in to a single manufacturer

- Less damage to pins and connectors thanks to lower insertion cycles.

All in all DAAH appears highly promising, its low cost and availability look likely to bring about a surge in the popularity of Phased Array technology. So keep an eye out for the latest innovations in Phased Array technology, right here at RFS!

Cracktest's slimline yoke no laughing matter!

We've all heard the old adage that big things come in small packages. Once again the NDT industry is able to attest to this, thanks to Cracktest's new MY-2 magnetic yoke. The new MY-2 is the smallest, lightest hand-held yoke on the market. The electromagnetic yoke is a rugged, high performance instrument with a few features that certainly set it apart from its competitors.

Weighing in at just 2.8kg, and capable of lifting 5 kg, this featherweight packs a surprising punch. The MY-2 is also significantly smaller than its rivals, easily gripped thanks to its slim design handle, making using the yoke easy and comfortable. The MY-2's size and weight make it ideal for inspecting components of different geometry - welds, castings and onsite inspection / repairs especially where there is limited access or in overhead situations. It is also, of course, much less weight to carry around while travelling.

The MY-2 also features a replaceable power cord. Unlike traditional yokes where twisting and bending of attachment cables can lead to irreversible damage, the MY-2 features a simple cable screw release, saving unnecessary time and expense. Cables can be replaced on the spot, allowing work to continue before taking the unit back to a workshop for a more thorough inspection and maintenance.

Double-Yoker: Y6 Induction Lights

RFS is proud to present another clever innovation to brighten up your day! Magnavis, Magnaflux's induction light, is a fantastic tool that uses simple physics to bring light to hard to reach places.

Magnavis is a slim, molded light that easily fits on the leg of Y-6 and other yokes to illuminate the inspection area. The light uses principles of induction to produce a current, illuminating the filament in the bulb. This needs no cables or external power source to work - simply attach to a yoke and activate as normal.

Magnavis provides 100 footcandles of light and allows the inspector to use yokes in darkened areas, when extra ambient light may be required.Click on the image to contact us for more information on the Magnavis induction light.

Russell's Desktop

A training day at the SONATEST ASEAN SALES MEETING

Travel seems to be the flavour of the times about now! The beginning of September saw David and Russell in Malaysia for the Sonatest ASEAN Sales and Training Meeting. Presently, Dave is visiting Perth for two weeks, and in the beginning of October Russell is off to Hong Kong for the Balteau International Sales Meeting, followed by a visit to suppliers in Taiwan. Next months RNN should feature loads on Balteau X-Ray equipment.

A lot is happening and we have plenty of new equipment to showcase along with our longstanding products. Foremost our aim is to provide the sort of service that will keep you coming back to us.
